Dubai (Middle East Hub)
A regional hub at the heart of the energy industry
Home to the world’s tallest building – the 830m Burj Khalifa , the iconic Burj-al-Arab hotel and the groundbreaking World Islands, Dubai has made headlines for its original construction and the speed of its growth into the region’s premiere economic powerhouse.
Often mistaken for a modern city without its own history, the earliest references to Dubai appear in the records of cartographers toward the close of the 11th century. It was a center of the local pearl trade and a fishing village before its growth into a major city, home to 2.5 million people.
Oil was discovered in the late 1960s, fueling further growth in Dubai’s infrastructure and tourism industries, also bringing large numbers of overseas workers to the region. In the modern era, Dubai’s economy supports a rich mix of industries and a thriving tourist trade.
